Obituary: IRENE HOLLAND BROWN SHELTON

Irene Holland Brown Shelton, 85, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 21, 2024.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at the Old Country Church with Reverend Donnie Chandler and her nephew, Johnny Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Mayodan Municipal Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church and all other times at the home of her twin sister, Alene Hall.

Irene was born on May 13, 1939 in Rockingham County to the late Dewey Holland and Ida Mae Chaney Holland. For thirty years, she worked for Washington Mills/Tultex and in her free time, Irene enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, particularly going to yard sales on Saturday mornings with her first husband, James. She was a dedicated member of the Old Country Church, where she found great joy and fellowship. Irene was a kind lady who had a deep love for cats and will forever be remembered for her caring nature.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first and second husband, James William Brown and Harold Shelton; sisters, Doris Swaim and Frances Elizabeth “Liz” Wilkins and step-sons, Johnny Shelton and Walter Hill.

Survivors include her sisters, Alene Hall, Louise Lenderman (Fred), Marie Fox (Gary) and Helen Hatcher (Eddie); step-son, Harold Shelton, Jr. (Dana); numerous nieces and nephews and special friends, Hope Landreth and Sharon Hodges.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Rockingham County Animal Shelter or Ancora Compassionate Care.
