Hugh Wayne Fagge, 85, of Stoneville, NC passed away on May 24, 2022 at Hospice of Rockingham County – Gibson House.

Wayne was born on October 17, 1936 to the late Roscoe and Ruby (Walker) Fagge. He grew up in Stoneville, helping his parents on their tobacco farm and navigating life as a kid growing up in the country. He played basketball and football at Stoneville High School and was voted most popular by his 1954 senior class. After high school, he got an accounting degree and then served his country for 4 years with the United States Air Force. He then lived in Washington D.C. While there, he attended an IBM training school, worked with computers and data processing for Blue Cross Blue Shield, and met his wife-to-be, Carol Ann Petrochko.

Once realizing that he wanted a quieter life outside of the city, he and Carol married and moved to South Carolina where he worked at Spring Mills. A few years later, they moved back to NC to start Stoneville Nursery, Inc. (plant nursery). Wayne had a talent for growing all types of plants, shrubs, and trees. He especially loved grafting Japanese maples.

Wayne was a creator and maker. He had lots of hobbies over the years, all of which he excelled at: skiing, hunting, finding Civil War relics (with metal detectors), bread baking, ancestry research, woodworking (furniture), wood carving, and even making his own canes to walk with as he got older.

He enjoyed being at home with his family, especially their lively meals together when he and Carol would tell stories about their younger days. He was also a friend to the many pets his family has had over the years.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol, of the home; daughters Bendte Fagge (husband Dave Massung) of Durham, NC, and Megan Fagge of Stoneville, NC; one brother, Clarence Fagge (wife Shirley) and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements will be arranged at a later date.
