Obituary: HELEN MARIE SCALES

Helen Scales, 65 of Greensboro, NC (formerly of Stoneville, NC) passed Saturday, April 8, 2023.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Mary D. Perry Memorial Chapel Madison, NC (Perry-Spencer Funeral Home).

Helen Marie Scales, of Greensboro, NC, was born July 25, 1957 in Fort Polk, LA. She was born to father, James Gen Scales and preceded in death by her mother, Carolyn Ruth Scales.

As a native of Rockingham County, Helen attended the local public schools, graduating from Stoneville High School in 1975. As a lifelong learner, she pursued further education at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC and Rockingham Community College. She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Eden, NC.

She was a dedicated and loving grandmother, mother, wife, family member and friend. Her fiery passion to live life fully was felt by all who she encountered. Helen was an inspiration to all and proud of her loved ones successes and endeavors. Her words of wisdom, encouragement and inspiration through daily tests, emails and phone calls will be missed by many. She believed in encouraging, uplifting and inspiring others, even when she herself might be down. She was a seeker of knowledge, a teacher and historian. Many benefitted from her inquisitiveness and resourcefulness; as she helped countless family members and friends identify programs and opportunities to enrich their lives.

Most importantly, Helen lit up the room with her contagious laugh. She was free spirited music lover and Parliament Funkadelic and Rick James enthusiast. She was a believer in our oneness, promoter of self-love and regularly connected our greater wellbeing to how she lived her life, through healthy, delicious meals, exercise and mediation.

Helen is survived by her husband,Ralph Leonard Bartlett, son, Cosiman L. Scales, grandson, O’Dell Scales, who she loved with all of her heart and soul, and daughters, Vulnavia M. Scales and Valronica M. Scales. She leaves to cherish her memories; her father, James (Gen) Scales and siblings, Vivian Redd (Curtis), Joyce Long-Dalton, Jerry Scales, Hattie Henry (Greg) and Melody Scales, in addition to her aunt, Mary Alice Mention.
