Hazel Sands Shuler, 78, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023 after a fierce battle against colon cancer.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at True Gospel Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at True Gospel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Shuler was born on June 20, 1945 in Stokes County to the late Johnie Sands and Hallie White Sands. She was a 1963 graduate of Pine Hall School and a former member of the Pine Hall Ladies Auxillary. Hazel was also a former active member of the PTA at Pine Hall Elementary School. For forty-seven years, she faithfully attended True Gospel Baptist Church, where she enjoyed the ladies prayer meeting, decorating the church fellowship hall every Christmas and being with her close friends, Nancy and Angie. She also enjoyed being a member of the Golden True Lights senior group.
For over fifty years, Hazel was a self-made, successful entrepreneur who managed her business, Creations by Hazel, where she made custom designed sleepwear, wedding and holiday decorations, as well as producing local fashion shows in the Pine Hall area. In recent years, she attended local and regional bazaars while selling hand-sewn item such as quilts, purses, tote bags and childrens travel pillows.
In her spare time, she was passionate about showcasing her Christmas village collection, working puzzles, and designing new home decorations. Hazel spent her evenings laughing at nightly episodes of Frasier and playing with her beloved twenty-six year old cockatiel, “Bird Bird.”
She was a loving, nurturing mother and was always a phone call away for her son who enjoyed daily conversations with her. Hazel will be remembered as a private, yet caring, compassionate lady who deeply loved her family. Mrs. Shuler had an amazing sense of humor and loved jovial sarcasm that she was able to pass on to her son. She was the best mama that any child could hope to have.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Ronald “Wayne” Shuler.
Survivors include her son, Ronald Grayson Shuler; nieces, Priscilla Terry Smothers (Michael), Gayle Southern Terry (Earl, Jr.) and Teresa Southern Hernandez (Francisco) and many extended family members and friends.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of Annie Penn Hospital, UNC Health Cancer Center in Eden and Hospice of Rockingham County who assisted her during her courageous battle against cancer.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to True Gospel Baptist Church.
