Hassell Joseph “Papa Joe” Tilley, 88, died, Monday, February 27, 2023, at LifeBrite Stokes County Nursing Home, Danbury, NC.

      The family will receive friends beginning at 10 am Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel with funeral services following at 11 am. Interment will be held in the Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Lawsonville, NC.

      He was born on April 21, 1934, in Stokes County, to the late John Hassel Tilley and Agnes Robertson Tilley. Joe was a 1953 graduate of Lawsonville High School where he excelled at Science. After retirement from RJ Reynolds with 28 years of service, he worked for 25 years as a green box attendant with Stokes County at the Lawsonville waste site.

      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by mother of his children, Margaret Reid Tilley; son, Jonathan Dale Tilley; son-in-law, Scott McKinny; brother, Paul Tilley, and sister, Louise Taylor.

      Survivors include Son, Joseph Tilley (Linda); Daughter, Janet Smith (Brent); Son, James Matthew Tilley (Carol); Daughter, Jeanne McKinny; Grandchildren, Daine Tilley, Shaine (Kortney) Tilley, Lindy Nichols, Jennifer (Michael) Denny, Andrew (Jennifer) Smith, Matthew Tilley, Tiffany (Cody) Smith, Allison Tilley, and Vada Wood; Great-grandchildren, Kiahna Nichols, Shawna Nichols, Jacob Denny, Emily Smith, Loralei Smith, Matthew Shields, Wesley Alderson-Geisler, Jacqueline Tilley, Taylor Spangler, Jacob, Luna, and Caisleigh Tilley; Nieces, Wilma Jean Tilley and Margaret Sue Cass and Nephew, Vernon Tilley.

      The family wishes to sincerely thank each one of the devoted nurses, caregivers, support staff and administrators at LifeBrite Stokes County Nursing Home for all their care, not only for Papa Joe but all of the residents. Dr. Kirk Sanders, physician for the nursing home, Pam Tillman, hospital administrator, and their nurses are an amazing team of professionals.

      Appreciation is also extended to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for Papa Joe’s end of life care.

      Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge is serving family.
