Harold Dean Adkins, 90, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024. He was born in Rockingham County on September 3, 1934, son of the late Elder Sam A. Adkins and Ethel Tucker Adkins.
Dean served in the United States Army and earned the rank of SFC3. After leaving the Army, he worked for Western Electric and then Norfolk-Southern Railway for thirty-four years and retired as Yardmaster. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and an active member of Mt. Hermon Methodist Church where he held many offices in the church over the years.
He loved life and was an active sports fan, his favorite being the Carolina Tar Heels, NASCAR Racing and Cardinals Baseball. He was the “perfect” Papa to his grandchildren, who love him dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Hall Adkins; step-mother, Meadie Adkins; brothers, Warren, Melvin, Reid and Harrison Adkins; sisters, Elba Doris Wilkins, Gayle Compton, Marybelle Newman and Ruth Dodson and step-brothers, J.F. and Paul Sands.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Brent Adkins; granddaughter, Shea Adkins Joy (Justin); great-grandchildren, Hunter Stanley and Callie Joy; brother, Sam Adkins, Jr.; step-brother, Lenzie Sands and many nieces and nephews.
