Gwendolyn “Gwen” Cardwell Reid, 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 5, 2023.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at the First Baptist Church of Mayodan. Interment will follow in the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery. Friends and family will gather at her residence.
A lifelong resident of Rockingham County, Gwen was born on on April 23, 1933 to the late George Cardwell and Emma Highfill Cardwell. She was a 1951 graduate of Stoneville High School. Gwen retired from Burlington Industries after forty-six years of service and then worked another ten years with the Madison Messenger. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mayodan for forty years, where she also sang in the choir. Gwen loved people and took every chance she could to be around her friends, therefore making lifelong friends wherever she went. Her love of shopping and decorating gave her many hours of visiting with local merchants, whom she adored.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, Franklin Reid; brothers, Harold and Milton Cardwell; sisters, Margaret Rudisill and Kathryn Vernon and her dear friend, Patty Pruitt, whom she considered her daughter.
Gwen leaves behind her two very special caregivers, Don Pruitt and Judy Boyd; nephew, Kent Vernon (Mindy) and so many friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Mayodan Building Fund, 101 S. 1st Avenue, Mayodan, NC 27027.
