Grady H. Shelton, Jr. passed away at his home on Monday, September 4th. Grady was born in October of 1928 to his parents, Grady and Annie, both deceased. In addition, he was preceded in death by his beloved Joe Anne, sisters Kathleen Wilson and Peggy Martin, and his brother, Thomas.

Grady is survived by his brother, Ray Shelton (Delois) and his sister, Faye Short (Floyd). He also leaves a legacy in his sons Rick (Janice), Keith (Donna), Terry (Debra) and his daughter, Susan Cox (Bob), as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Four years after graduating from Madison High School in 1947, he met and married his dearest Joe Anne, a loving relationship that endured for 64 1/2 years until her death. He joined the US Army and served in Japan during the Korean Conflict, being honorably discharged as a corporal after two years. Once home from overseas, he attended and graduated from High Point College in 1957 and immediately went to work for Gem Dandy, Inc. At the end of his 47 years with the company, he retired as a vice president.

For nearly 50 years, Grady was a member of Madison United Methodist Church, serving on boards and participating in the Methodist Men. He also served for 13 years on the Madison-Mayodan School Board, three of those years as chairman. Grady was a member of the American Legion and the Rotary Club and volunteered for many years with Caregivers of Rockingham County.

Grady loved the sport of golf and the fellowship he shared with many dear friends both at home and across the state. He was also a diehard Carolina fan, watching as many games as he could. He got so much enjoyment from wiling away the hours at Raymond’s Cars and meeting up for a beer with the ‘Madison Mafia’ downtown.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 9th at Madison United Methodist Church with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. in the fellowship hall and service at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery with military honors. Grady would want everyone to be comfortable so please wear casual attire.
