Glenda Darlene Allen of Reidsville (formerly of High Point) passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 4, 2023 with her family by her side.
Born in Reidsville on November 5, 1942 to John and Bertha Walker Allen, Glenda graduated from Reidsville Senior High and UNCG. She learned that teaching school was not her calling, so she joined the Red Cross. After two weeks of training as a Red Cross recreation worker or “Donut Dollie” as they were called, she headed into the Vietnam War. Her job was to bring a touch of home, compassion, and comfort to the soldiers. She served in Vietnam from July 1967-July 1968.
Glenda returned to Vietnam in 1971 working with the USO whose mission is to “strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.” She continued her work with the USO in Thailand and Texas. Glenda returned to High Point and finished her career with Guilford County Child Protective Services. She spent her entire life in service of others.
Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Carolyn Chilton and brother-in-law, Scott Chilton. She is survived by her sister, Marie Kivett (Ed) of Independence, VA, her nephew, Branden Chilton (Chasity), her niece, Dawn Barts (Jason) both of Reidsville, great nieces, a great nephew, and a soon-to-be great, great nephew.
A graveside service is planned for Monday, April 10, 2023 at 3:00 P.M. at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, 2535 Grooms Rd, Reidsville, NC.
