Gary Smith, 66, of Eden, NC passed Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m at Perry Spencer Funeral Home, Eden, NC. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 from 1:30 p.m – 2:00 p.m at Morning Star Baptist Church, Eden, NC with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery, Eden, NC (Hamlin Cemetery).
Mr. Gary Lynn Smith, 66 of 600 Friendly Road, Eden, NC entered eternal rest on Tuesday, October 19, 2022 at his home in Eden.
Gary (known to family & friends as “Micky” was born on February 20, 1956 to the late Peter James smith and Rosetta “Bunch” Smith (nee Harris). survivors incude sister, Laura Jean Smith Scales of Jamestown, NC; half-sister, Wanda Rogers Wilson (Keith) of Raleigh, NC; and brother, Donald Roger Smith (Diana) as well as nieces, Ashley Lauren Scales and Shannon Harriett Smith and nephews, Darren Gary Smith. Also surviving are Aunt Beulah Galloway of Eden, NC, Uncle Ernest Harris, Jr. of Silver Springs, MD and a number of other relatives.
Mick was retired high school teacher in the Virginia Public School System. He taught, coached and mentored students at several schools located in Martinsville and Clarksville, VA.
Mick graduated from Morehead High School in Eden, NC, Class of 1974, where he laso excelled at playing basketball. Mick then matriculated first to North Carolina A & T Star University before transferring to UNC Greensboro, where he graduated in the class of 1978 with a BS degree in Political Science. Mick was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Farternity Inc since 1999 and a member and officer of the Martinsville Chapter of Martinsville, VA.
As a youth, Mick was a member at Morning Star Baptist Church in Eden, having been baptized in 1963. Later he attended and served at church, while residing in Clarksville, VA. In 2021, upon his retirement he moved back to the family home in Eden, and re-affiliated with Morning Star Missionary Church, where he served in the Male Choir.
We-read in a variety of topics from history to politics to sports to matters of faith, Mick was also a diligent Bible student. As a young adult, Mick also worked for his parents at the family owned and operated Smith’s Florist in Reidsville,NC and cultivated many relationships both professional and persona throughout the county. Pursuing his interest in politics and government, Mick entered the race for NC Assembly this past year seeking the Democratic Party nomination. Though his run did not gain his party’s nomination, Mick garnered a respectable number of votes in his first venture as a political condidate.
