Ernest Gilmer Smith, Jr., 92, of Eden, NC, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at his home.
A funeral service will be held 2pm Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel with burial and military honors to follow at Overlook Cemetery in Eden. Reception will be held, following the burial, at the Morehead-Fair House, 420 Boone Rd, Eden. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 1-2pm, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. For those unable to attend the service, Mr. Smith will lie-in-repose from 1-5pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at Fair Funeral Home.
Ernest was born March 22, 1930, in Leaksville, NC, to the late Ernest Gilmer Smith, Sr., and Beatrice Dent Smith. Ernest was a U.S. Combat Veteran of the Korean War; one of the Chosin Frozen; earning 5 Bronze Service Stars and nominated for a Purple Heart. He was a truck driver for Washington Mills Co. in Mayodan, NC, Long Brothers of Summerfield, NC, and Allied Foods, Inc. in Atlanta, GA. He was a charter member of Osborne Missionary Baptist Church.
Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Linda Glasgow of Danville, VA, Vickie Gauldin (Kenneth) of Eden, NC; sons, Tony W. Smith of Eden, NC, Steven Smith of Eden, NC; five grandchildren, Kim DePriest (Chris) of Eden, NC, Chuck Wilson (Kim) of Danville, VA, Joyce Martin (Tim) of Fieldale, VA, Brandy Glasgow of Ridgeway, VA, Justin Glasgow of Eden, NC; six great-grandchildren, Ryan DePriest, Alysia Wilson, Dakota Wilson, Katlyn Richardson, Wyatt Reavis, Chaynce M. Wilson; siblings, Betty Brown of Eden, NC, Donald Smith of Clover, VA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Estelle Boothe Smith; grandchild, Michael K. Wilson; sisters and brothers, Hallie Smith, Lonnie Smith, Rae Newton, Gae Newton, Bill Smith, Ida Bell Hylton, Phillip Smith, Barbara Ann Smith, David Smith.
