Elree was born November 29, 1928, in Patrick County, VA, to the late Charlie Hopkins and Ethel Hylton Hopkins. She was a graduate of Draper High School. Elree was a member of First Baptist Church of Draper. She worked as the owner/operator of Elree’s Sweet Shoppe in Eden until retiring in 1992. Mama was many things to many people. Painting, crocheting and other crafts kept her busy in her spare time, and of course she did cake decorating for many years before retiring. She was Mama to her daughters, Nana to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Daddy called her “Pie Face”, why I don’t know…maybe because she was “The Elree” from the Sweet Shoppe. Folks from our church had other names for her like “SweetRee”, “Our Queen”, “Ms Elree”, Second Mom and friend. The best name she was ever called was “A Child of God”. She is now with her heavenly father and all the saved that have gone on before. The saved of us that are left here will miss her but one day we will be walking the streets of gold with all of them.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Kathy Bowman (Jeffrey) of Eden, Gina Kingston (Michael) of Eden; grandchildren, Patricia O’dell of Eden, Daniel Blake Carter (Laura) of Eden; great-grandchildren, Holly Landreville (Jacob), Travis O’dell (Crystal), Seth O’dell, Landon Carter, all of Eden; great-great-granddaughter due in February, Elena Rae O’Dell; brothers, Howard C Hopkins of Eden, R. Glen Hopkins of Manteo, Barry Hopkins of Greensboro; sister, Merita Hopkins of Reidsville; family friend, Lavern Lancaster and best friend of over 60 years, Janice Turner.
In addition to her parents, Elree was preceded in death by her loving husband, Otis Daniel Carter; brother, Maynard Hopkins; sister, Doris Stophel.
We would like to thank the medical staff at UNC Rockingham, Hospice of Rockingham Co., and Dr. Terry Daniel our doctor and friend for all the care and attention showered on mama and the caring attitude
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to First Baptist Church of Draper, 1017 Fieldcrest Road, Eden, NC 27288 or Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
