Ms. Ella Mae Ross Mitchell departed this life on Friday morning, October 27, 2023.

As a native and lifelong resident of Rockingham County, North Carolina, she attended the local public schools and was formerly employed by Shipman’s Healthcare. As an exceptional wife and homemaker, she nurtured and raised her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At a tender age, she united with the Greater Shining Light Holiness Church, under the leadership of Elder James Leak where she faithfully served until her health declined. During her leisure, she enjoyed listening to gospel music and cooking for her family (potato salad and meatloaf were her favorite offerings).

Her parents, Florence Clark Ross and Worth Ross; beloved husband, Calvin Edward Mitchell; son, Calvin Leon Mitchell; granddaughter, Cearria D. Neal; siblings, Worth Ross, Jr., Rebecca Bailey, Nannie Ross, Shirley Blackwell, David Ross and James “Percy” Ross, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: daughters, Glenda Mitchell (Walter) and Priscilla Mitchell (Joey); sons, James Edward Mitchell (Melissa), Ronald Mitchell (Vanessa) and Donald Mitchell; grandchildren, Calvin D. Mitchell, Ivie Galloway (Brittany), Jessica Mitchell, Benita Winchester (Derek), James Edward Mitchell, Jr. (Camille), Steven Mitchell, Christopher Mitchell, Cornell Winchester (Samantha), Deashia Galloway, Donald Mitchell, Jr., Trevon Mitchell and Rebekah Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Dashawn Harris, Derek Snipes, Jr., Ivieanna Galloway, Josiah MItchell, Justice Winchester, Jacob Galloway, Leelan Galloway, Jayanna, Christina and expecting Josiah in January 2024; bonus grandchildren, Vanessa Winchester, Cali Winchester and Madisen Jumper; sisters, Mary Connally and Janice Staples (Rev. Mark); brother, Robert Ray Ross; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4, 2023 from the Greater Shining Light Holiness Church, 408 Guilford Street with Elder James Leak presiding. The family visitation will be Saturday from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in the Greenview Cemetery. Public viewing will be Friday afternoon from 3 until 8 p.m. at Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street. Her remains are in the care of Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street.
