Obituary: EDNA RUTH GROCE

Edna Ruth Groce, 78, of Providence, NC went to be with the Lord on Sunday February 12, 2023 being the second daughter of the late James Edward and Virgie Lewis Groce. She is also preceded in death by two children: Dora Lynn Johnson, and Terry Glenn Johnson.

The family will conduct a memorial service at First Baptist Church 378 W. Church St. Yanceyville, NC at a later date.

She is survived by her devoted daughter: Carol Ann Schivley (Richard) of Blanch, and her two sons: James Edward Johnson of Providence, and Robert Johnson of Danville, VA. Her precious grandchildren Carrie Sartin (Daniel), Austin Schivley, Jordan Johnson, and Sadie Johnson and three great grandchildren: Carter, Bowman, and Lela. Edna was part of a large family of seven siblings that included Nina Tedder of Hartsville, SC, Janet Melton of Danville, VA, Becky Cutshaw (Howard) of Tallahassee, FL, James Groce, Jr. (Debbie) of Knoxville, TN, Leslie Cline of McLeansville, NC, Vera Farmer (Larry) of Danville, VA, and Sarah Jo Dye (Gary of Wytheville, VA. Edna was a longtime employee of Dan River Mills, Value City, and Dollar General in Danville, VA, Edna’s home was always welcoming, creating a place of comfort where everyone gathered. Her life was of unimaginable strength being a single mother of five children, enduring the loss of two and struggling with health issues. Her legacy of strength and devotion to family and love will live on and serve as an inspiration to all who knew her.

As a young woman, Edna was always in the kitchen learning from her Mama’s cooking secrets and she passed it on to her daughter, Carol Ann, as the best cook in the family. She had a love for flowers and watching the hummingbirds. Her loved ones will be able to take comfort in the things she crocheted for them and the diamond art she created. She also loved to collect anything to do with the Pioneer Woman. Her legacy can be summed up by Proverbs 31:28 “Her children arise and call her blessed.”
