Edna Candace East Martin, 95, of Madison, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Born in Surry County on November 27, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Joel and Sarah McCraw East. Edna was a devoted hairdresser for over seven decades, owning and operating “Mother and Daughter Beauty Shop” for 55 years. She was also a gifted crocheter and knitter, known for her kind spirit and deep love for animals.

A longtime member of Mayodan Methodist Church, Edna served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher for 35 years, an active member of United Methodist Women, and held various leadership roles within the church. In 2005, she was honored with the Laity Service Award from both her church and the Western North Carolina Conference for her lifetime of service and devotion.

She was a sweet soul who loved like Jesus and touched many lives with her gentle presence.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl “Bill” D. Martin, and her Brother, William “Wendall” Timothy East and wife Bert; her longtime business partner, Mary Frances Justice; and her best friend Edith Mitchell.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Tammy Martin Dorsett (Jonathan) and her son Tommy Martin, both of Madison; her three grandchildren, Ashton Candace Dorsett (Paul), Heather Lee Dorsett, and Carlie Ann Dorsett; her great granddaughter, Hattie Ryan Schmidt; a great niece, Cathy Cagle; great nephew, Chris Cagle; and her “special girls who shared their loves with Bill and Edna”, Bunny Martin Stuart, Linda East Cagle, Barbara Cardwell Newman, Betty Jo Bourne, Carol Martin, and Sherri Shelton.

The family wishes to thank Debra Edlin and Tracy Cooley for all the care given to Edna.

A reception will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall at Mayodan Methodist Church where the family will visit with friends. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon with Rev. Wendy Bishop-Reddick officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Madison.
