Obituary: DWIGHT “HOOT” GIBSON

Dwight “Hoot” Gibson, 78, passed away Friday morning, September 9, 2020 at Gibson House in Reidsville.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, September 13th at Colonial Funeral Home & Chapel with burial to follow in Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 1 – 2 PM, in the chapel and other times at his residence.

A native of Rockingham County, NC, Dwight was born January 21, 1944 to the late Gerald Gibson and Gloris Barrett Gibson. He was a graduate of Pine Hall School and was a four year starter in baseball and basketball. After graduation he played baseball for Elon College. Dwight joined the US Air Force in 1966 where he served for four years at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

Following his stint in the Air Force he went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration at Jacksonville Air Route Traffic Control Center as an air traffic controller. In 1977 he transferred to Raleigh Air Traffic Control Tower.

In 1979 the greatest thing in this world happened when Dwight accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior, becoming a born again Christian. You must be born again from death to life.

In 1980 Dwight transferred to Greensboro Air Traffic Control Tower where he retired after 28 years of service.

In 1981 he met Janet Thacker of Madison and they were married March 23, 1982. They have resided in Madison ever since.

After retirement Dwight enjoyed playing golf with his friends and being an active member in the local church.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet Gibson of the home; two step-sons, Mark Thacker and Vann Thacker (Penny), both of Madison; three step-grandchildren, Heather Thacker of Madison, Tiffany Thacker of Stoneville and Ivey Thacker of Greenville, NC; a brother, Ronnie Gibson (Terri) of Winston-Salem; sisters, Violet Brown of Durham and Sue Elder of High Point and his caregivers, Donna Newsom, Shelia Anderson and Curtis Oliver.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Gibson House, c/o Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
