Donnie Wade Amos, 86, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 28, 2023.
Donnie was born in Stokes County on October 17, 1936 to the late Bruce Cyphus and Lula Dodson Amos. He was a 1954 High School graduate of Sandy Ridge High School, where he participated in basketball, football and baseball.
He was drafted into the US Army after high school and served 4 years. Ironically, while serving his country and traveling around the world, he was assigned to doing something he loved – representing the army while playing sports. He was also tasked with developing activities and sporting events for the children of the families who were stationed on the base.
When he returned home from the Army he began farming tobacco and harvesting hay. He worked at the YMCA in Winston Salem, teaching children how to swim and play organized sports. He loved to share the stories of his time at the ‘Y.’ In 1972 he began establishing the Red Top Cafe and Miniature Golf Course, Arcade and Convenient Store. He also began building storage units for Leonard Aluminum Buildings and later became a salesman for Carolina Carports, and Steel Buildings where he continued to sell until his death.
His greatest passion was serving his Lord and Savior. Donnie never missed an opportunity to share his faith with others. He had a special heart for growing children up in the Lord whether it was loving and encouraging them at the Red Top, at church or with his own family. He loved serving his community, working hard and spreading God’s love to others.
He was a member at Delta United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 37 years. He served as Lay Leader, Administrative Council Chairman, Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent, President of the United Methodist Men and took several opportunities to preach at churches in the community.
In addition to his parents, Donnie was preceded in death by a brother, Orell Amos, sister, Doris Martin, and brothers –in–law Watson Gunter, Bethel Smith and Clarence Martin.
Survivors include his loving wife Martha Joyce Amos of 57 years, daughter Jennifer Amos Dyer and husband Jeff, granddaughters Kennedy and Landry Dyer, Sisters Connie Amos Gunter and Ruth Smith and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at Delta Methodist Church with visitation beginning at 1:00 P.M. with the service following at 2:00 P.M..
A register will be available from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 2, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel for those who would like to come by to sign the register and pay their respect.
