Donna Fonville Lawson, 80, left this earthly life on Monday, June 12, 2023.

A celebration of her life will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, June 17, 2023 in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment will follow in the Comer’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Donna was a devoted daughter, wife, mother neighbor, church memher, and friend. Raised by her grandparents on a farm in Madison, she quickly learned the value of hard work. She married her high school sweetheart, Jimmy, and they were married fifty-five years, until his passing. She graduated from nursing in High Point, NC and soon began working in the emergency room at Danbury Hospital and continued her nursing career in retirement homes, doctors’ offices, and ultimately occupational health nursing for AMP, Halstead, and Duke Energy. Upon retirement, she continued caring for others, working at Western Rockingham Family Medicine.

Donna participated in several disaster recovery mission trips following national disasters. She never met someone she wasn’t willing to help. She loved to read, she was an excellent cook, and she was very involved at Comer’s Chapel Baptist Church as a homebound Sunday School teacher. The epitome of a steel magnolia, or maybe a gritty gardenia, Donna gave selflessly of herself and shared her love of life with anyone who came in contact with her, but especially to her family and to her grandchildren. She always enjoyed keeping up with friends, whether local or from nursing school. Our world is dimmer today with the loss of her light.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Brenson Fonville, Jr. and Opal Rivers Cally; husband, Jimmy Nelson Lawson; brothers, Francis Zavier Cally, Ronald Fonville and Timothy David Cally; half-sister, Linda Fonville Jackson and special aunt, Frances Joyce.

Survivors include her children, Jamie Lawson (Gray) and John Lawson; grandchildren, Jude and Jace Lawson; special nephew, Barry Joyce and many special extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Comer’s Chapel Baptist Church, 1990 Bald Hill Loop, Madison, NC 27025.
