Charles Nevada “Pete” Benton departed this life on Tuesday afternoon, December 20, 2022.

As a native and resident of Rockingham County, North Carolina for the majority of his life, he attended the local public schools and was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1954. With courage and tenacity, he served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. At a tender age, he united with the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and later became a faithful member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee and a member of the United Methodist Men. Being community oriented, he actively served on the Reidsville Planning Board, member of the REMCO Board, James Rudd Post No. 199, American Legion, Past President and former Golf Chairman of The Fellow’s Club. Following many years of dedicated service, he retired from the Lorillard Tobacco Company. As an avid sportsman with a penchant for golfing, he enjoyed socializing, listening to music, watching television and philanthropy. “Pete”, as he was affectionately referred by family and close friends, was blessed with a charismatic personality and was loved by all who knew him. Being well-liked and well-respected, he impacted the lives of many and was truly an inspiration to all. We thank God for his beautiful life.

His parents, Ida Wilson Benton and Eugene Benton, Sr.; beloved wife, Louise Martin Benton; son, Basil Benton; siblings, James Elwood Samuel Benton, Lorenzo Benton and Eugene Benton, Jr., preceded him in death.

Survivors are: loving daughters, Portia Benton and Sandra Wilder (Vernon, II); grandchildren, Dr. Venis Wilder (CJ), Vernon Wilder, III (Ayiesha), Benton Wilder (Nicole) and Vabrice Wilder (Joshua); nine great-grandchildren; special great-nephew, Bryant Martin; special cousins, Riley Rankin (Marjorie) and Bill Rankin; sisters-in-law, Shirley Benton and Mildred Benton; devoted friends, Edna Daye and Pertenar Ingram; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2022 from the Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1004 West Harrison Street with Pastor Bahekelwa Imatha presiding. The family visitation will be Friday from 2 until 2:30 p.m. at the church.
