Buddy Wayne Cox, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Sartin officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Jimmy Davis officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday night at Wilkerson Funeral home from 6:00-7:30PM.
Buddy was born on March 20, 1942, to the late Lonnie and Janie Cox in Rockingham County. He was a simple man, an avid Duke basketball fan, and was known to his beloved grandchildren as Papa. He enjoyed cutting wood, playing golf, going for a drive, and operating heavy equipment like the motor grader and salt truck for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He loved singing old time gospel music and even lead the choir at Burton Memorial and opened Sunday School at Glen Hope Baptist Church. Buddy loved his family and was fortunate enough to celebrate his 62nd wedding anniversary with his wife a few days before he passed. He was loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lonnie Preston Cox, Jr. and Wallace Cox; sisters, Louise Williams and Shirley Dunlap.
Buddy is survived by his wife, Betty Cox; children, Tabby Bryant and husband Dwayne; Dwayne Cox and wife Mary Ann; grandchildren, Landon Cox, Maghen Bryant, Justin Bryant and wife Madison, Kelsey Gull and husband Del; great-grandchildren, Lyli, Tate, Junie, Blair, Jolene, Adeline, and Josie; sisters, Joanne Sutton, Doris Myrick and husband Leon; his special morning friends at Short Sugars; and his faithful K-9 companion, Trudy.
