After an extended illness of two years, Bobby Roberts, 86, of Stokesdale went home to Heaven’s pearly gates to meet the Lord on Sunday, August 28, 2022.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at Ellisboro Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison and all other times at the home.
Bobby was born on January 18, 1936 in the Ellisboro community of Rockingham County to the late August and Cora Shelton Roberts. He worked at Vicks/Proctor & Gamble for twenty-three years, retiring in 1996. After retirement, he stayed busy collecting cans and became known as “The Can Man.” He loved spending time at the two local stores, Rocky’s Grocery and Knight’s Store, where you would find him sitting on the bench outside greeting everyone. For many years he coached men’s softball and enjoyed going to races at the local dirt tracks. He was a member of Ellisboro Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Michael Lupton, Betty Roberts and Augusta Roberts and two brothers, Paul Graham “Bud” Roberts and Donald Ray Roberts.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Doris Vernon Roberts; son, Bobby Roberts, Jr. “Buster” (Wendy); daughter, Susan Tilley (Bobby); three grandchildren, Holly Tilley Manuel (Jason), Chase Roberts Tilley and Kayla Jean Roberts; one great-grandchild, Liam Rhett Manuel and siblings, Mary Sue Gerringer (Buddy), Linda Combs (Tommy), Patricia Myers (Buddy), Debbie Clodfelter (Mark), Sandy Robertson (Tommy), August Roberts, Jr. “Butch” and David Roberts (Connie).
