

Billy Lunsford Childress, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on November 28, 1940, Bill was the son of the late Homer and Beulah Childress, whose love and guidance helped shape the man he became.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis Strock Childress, his loving daughters, Kim Hanner and Sherrie Kruse, five cherished grandchildren, and four adored great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous friends and extended family members who were deeply touched by his generous spirit and kind heart. A special friend, Vicente Hernandes, held a meaningful place in Bill’s life and heart.
A proud graduate of George Washington High School in 1959, Bill went on to further his education by taking courses at Virginia Tech and the University of South Carolina. His strong work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his career. He spent 15 years at Roses, 34 years at Wrangler, 8 years at Bi-Rite, and 16 years at Greensboro National Golf Course.
Bill was a true outdoorsman who loved sports and staying active. He had a lifelong passion for golf, softball, baseball, and basketball, and remained active well into his later years—pitching his last softball game at the age of 72. A loyal supporter of the University of Virginia Cavaliers, Bill cheered on their many teams with unwavering enthusiasm.
In addition to his career and love of sports, Bill was deeply committed to serving his community. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and other community service organizations, always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need. His compassion and selflessness left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Family meant everything to Bill. He held deep respect and love for his parents, with whom he often traveled to the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. Some of his fondest memories were spent hunting and fishing with his father and enjoying the comfort of his mother’s home-cooked meals.
Bill will be remembered for his warm smile, generous heart, deep love for his family, and quiet strength. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and service lives on in the many lives he touched.
