Betty Nelson Steele, 78, left for her heavenly home on Sunday, August 14, 2022, at Wesley Long Hospital after a long battle with cancer surrounded by her family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 PM, Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel, Sandy Ridge. Friends will be received 2 hours prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was born to the late Marion and Lulie Nelson on August 16, 1943. She married her sweetheart, Norman Steele, on August 7, 1960, and they were blessed with 62 years together in Sandy Ridge, NC.

At the time of her death, she was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and attended Ayersville Baptist Church in her youth. Betty was a 1960 graduate of Stoneville High School. She worked for Jefferson Pilot, Gem Dandy, MacField, and UNIFI. She spent many hours in the tobacco field with many neighbors and family.

One of her talents was cooking and baking, which she shared with many family members and friends as often as she could. She loved sharing her recipes too.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws Otis and Mozelle Steele, her sister LaVerne Vernon, brothers Bobby and Danny Nelson, her sister-in-law Carolyn Steele and her brothers-in-law Bobby Lackey, O’Neil and Delane Steele.

Betty is survived by her husband, Norman; her daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Nolan Lawson; her granddaughters Nicole Lawson and Ashley Avis (Charles Avis); her sisters-in-law, Linda Nelson, Virginia Lackey, and Roxie Steele; her brother-in-law, Royce Steele; her nieces, Pat Elliot, Lisa Baker, Karinda Wilson, Tonya Shelton, Meredith Snoddy, Melissa Garner, Courtney Shelton, Marisa Wilson; and her nephews, Don Steele, Darrell Nelson, Cameron Ward.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 4128 NC 704 Hwy E, Sandy Ridge, NC 27046.

Colonial Funeral Home in Sandy Ridge is serving the family.
