Betty E. Hairston Scales, 102, of Pine Hall, NC passed, Wednesday, January 4, 2023.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at Pine Hall Baptist Church, Pine Hall, NC. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. There will be NO public viewing.
Betty Hairston Scales was born June 8, 1920, to the late Fred and Luddie “Pud” Hairston. She departed her life January 4, 2023 at the age of 102 years.
She received her education in the Pine Hall and Madison school systems. She joined the Pine Hall Missionary Baptist Church in September 1934 and was the last one of the 26 candidates to be baptized in the Dan River. She married Fletcher Scales, Jr. in 1946 and moved to Washington, DC. She worked for the U.S Treasury Department and Peter Pan Five & Dime store for 30 years and moved back to North Carolina in 1968 to help care for her father, who passed away in 1974. She went to work for Burlington Industries in Stokesdale, NC for 15 years and retired to care for her mother who passed away in 1987.
After moving back to NC she renewed her membership at Pine Hall Baptist Church and served as Church Clerk and Sunday School Secretary for a number of years. She was also a member of the Missionary Circle, Senior Choir and was the “Mother of the Church” and served any place she was needed. She volunteered at the Stokes County Outreach Ministry for 20 years, along with caring for sick and shut-in families. She was a Charter Member of the National Hairston Clan, Inc. and for many years she did the Memorial Service for the local Hairston Reunion. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Stokes-Rockingham Volunteer Fire Department. Her motto was “Reach out and help somebody and your living will not be in vain”.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Luddie “Pud” Hairston; Husband, Fletcher Scales, Jr., daughter; Babette Scales, brothers; John Lewis Hairston (Ruth) and Frank Hairston (Mary).
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: Brothers; Charlie Hairston (Corinne-deceased) and Horace Hairston (Martha D.) both of Pine Hall, NC, sister; Martha Johnson (Bobby Ray) of Cincinnati, OH and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
