Barbara Jo York, 76, Sandy Ridge, NC resident, passed away on August 3, 2024 in Greensboro, NC.

Barbara, loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and social worker, was born on December 18, 1947 to Marland “Bud” and Marion “Jeanne” Rand in Minneapolis, MN. She was committed to her communities in Iowa and North Carolina. As a social worker, she helped children and families in Iowa build healthy and loving relationships. She worked hard to support her family’s activities, attending band concerts, sporting events and other school activities. In North Carolina, Barbara served as a poll worker during the elections, and was active in both Sandy Ridge Ruritans and the Danbury Library book club.

Most of her life was spent in partnership with her husband of 52 years, John York. Barb and John loved traveling, seeing all kinds of live music and shows, watching sports and home improvement shows, cooking and baking, birding, gardening and hosting family and friends at their dream home in the woods. Barb will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, compassionate and calming nature, and sharp wit.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John York; her parents, Bud and Jeanne Rand; her two brothers, John and Paul Rand; her sister Frances Sandlin and her son-in-law, Larry Willis.

She leaves behind her three kids, Amy, Christopher (Marcus Lo), and Kathryn (Nicholas Musel); her 4 grandchildren, Samantha Willis, Sadie Musel, Aaron Lo, and Elia Lo; and her two sisters, Mary Rand (Melodie Creighton) and Margaret Rand as well as her brother, Jim Rand.

A memorial service will be held August 24 when family and friends will join together to remember her (more details will follow later).

In lieu of flowers, the York family suggests donations be made to Kamala Harris for President, Planned Parenthood, or Habitat for Humanity.

Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge is serving the family.
