Buddy Bowers, 84, of Eden passed away October 19, 2023, at Hospice of Rockingham County.
Funeral services (DATE HAS CHANGED) will be 2pm Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Fair Funeral Home, 432 Boone Road, Eden. Burial will follow the service in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Reidsville. Family will receive friends Monday, October 23, 2023 from 5 – 7 pm, at Fair Funeral Home.
Buddy was born August 19, 1939, in Leaksville, NC (now Eden), to the late Arthur R. “Cooney” and Sunshine Cardwell Bowers. Buddy was a beloved husband, father, uncle, cousin and friend to all who knew him. He was a 1957 graduate of Tri-City High (now Morehead) and played football at Wake Forest; ultimately graduating from Guilford College. A favorite teacher and coach to many who went through school at Morehead High and Holmes Junior High (now middle school), he taught almost 30 years, retiring in 1994 and enjoyed a busy and fun retirement for almost 30 years as well. In retirement, he enjoyed golf, fishing, wood carving, video poker and traveling with his close-knit group of lifelong friends. He also spent a lot of his time helping others by taking friends and family to appointments, medical treatments, on trips to Cherokee and always had a joke to tell to make others laugh (or sometimes roll their eyes). For the last 15 years, he was also a “cat dad” to his favorite pet, Daisy, who died in March 2023.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Peggy, and daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Mark Good. Also surviving are his nephew, Sean Vestal (Becky), many cousins, great-nieces (Ryleigh and Maycie Vestal) and great-nephew (Eli Vestal).
Buddy was predeceased by his parents, mother and father-in-law (Kathlyn “Khaki” and John Burks) as well as sister-in-law and brother-in-law (Patsy and Bobby Vestal) and nephew (Scott Vestal).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375 or The Alzheimer’s Association, 4600 Park Road, Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209.
