Ann Hankins Shelton, 66, of Madison gained her angel wings on Monday, December 12, 2022.

A celebration of her life will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2022 at Mayodan First Baptist Church with visitation prior to the service from 4 p.m.- 6 p.m.

Ann was born August 5, 1956 in Leaksville, NC to the late Leonard and Alice Hankins. She was a 1974 graduate of Stoneville High School and a current member of Mayodan First Baptist Church. Through the years she was always active in the church as a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir, and as the youth and women’s group leader. She helped coach the cheerleaders at McMichael and was the caretaker for numerous family members. She had a heart of gold.

Ann worked as a sewing supervisor for 30+ years at Blue Bell, Bassett Walker, and Cross Creek Apparel. She and her best friend Wanda Overman retired from the catering business after 20+ years. Just this past spring she returned to substitute teaching for Rockingham County Schools. She loved making a difference in the life of a child.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. You could always find Ann at a ballgame cheering for her grandchildren. Ann was a wonderful mother, Nannie, sister, and friend. She had a contagious laugh and smile, a great sense of humor, and was loved by all! She always gave the best hugs, she loved unconditionally, and never met a stranger.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Laura Southard and husband, Jason; grandchildren, Lane and Mattie Southard, Blake and Kayley Shelton of the home, Jordan Shelton, and her bonus grandchildren, Atley and Olivia Wilson; sister, Alicia Atkinson (Steve); brothers, Lynn Hankins (Michele) and Jimmy Hankins; sister-in-law, JoAnn Murray (Bobby); best friend, Wanda Overman; brothers-in-law, Jimmy Shelton (Wanda) and Dwight Shelton (Debbie); step-sons, Brad (Jennifer) and Brandon Shelton; nieces and nephews, Scott Hankins, Shannon (Tim) Helms, Kathryn Atkinson & Miller, Austin (Sara) and Layton Helms, Clint (Shelly) Hankins & Ella, Logan Hankins, Nathan Hankins, Ashley McCoy, Courtney Williams, Jessica Kratchmer, Amber Wade, and numerous cousins.

In addition to her parents, Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Shelton and her sister, Jenny Hankins.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Colonial Funeral Home to help with funeral costs or to Mayodan First Baptist Church.
