Obituary: ALICE IRENE SHELTON GOINS

Alice Irene Goins, born on October 12, 1930, surrounded by her sons peacefully departed from this world on January 27, 2024. A longstanding resident of Rockingham County, Alice’s life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and cherished moments.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Ray Funeral Home with Pastor C.J. Keister officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Madison. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy Goins. She is survived by her sons, Roy Edward Goins (Eddie) (Valeria) and Donnie Goins (Lorie), who were a constant source of joy and pride in her life.

She joins her heavenly family, preceded in death by her father, Lemmie Shelton, mother Agnes Shelton, brothers Ernest Shelton, Lewis Shelton, Ralph Shelton, Roy Lester, and sister Ruby Griffin. Alice is survived by her sister, Ila McKee and sister-in-law Shirley Shelton who continues to hold a special place in the family’s heart.

Alice was a woman of many talents and passions. She spent 25 years as a home maker and farmer. Following this, she contributed 20 years of service to the Britthaven Nursing Center, showcasing her compassionate and caring nature for the elderly. In the later years of her life, Alice provided comfort and companionship to seniors in need for over a decade.

As a loving wife, Alice stood by her husband through thick and thin, demonstrating a commitment that was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her love for her two sons, Eddie and Donnie was immeasurable, surpassing understanding and leaving a lasting legacy of family devotion.

Alice found spiritual solace at Comers Chapel, where she was an active and cherished member of her faith community. She held a special place in her heart for family gatherings, especially during the Christmas season, where her warm presence and culinary skills were truly appreciated.

Known for her delicious desserts, Alice’s banana pudding was renowned as the best. She loved picking blackberries to make jams and growing gardens for canning. Her sweet icicle pickles as well as her chocolate fudge were a big hit with the local community. She would give them out as Christmas presents.

Her love extended to her grandchildren, Brian Goins (Brandy), Jennifer Adams (Ron), Kayleigh Goins, and great-grandchildren Noah Adams, Jenna Adams, and Callie Goins.

In addition to her family, Alice was an avid fan of NC State and Duke Basketball, finding joy in cheering for her favorite teams.

As we bid farewell to Alice Irene Goins, let us celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, kindness, and cherished memories. May her soul rest in eternal peace and may her legacy of love continue to inspire those who knew and loved her.
