Greensboro, N.C., November 4, 2024 – The YMCA of Greensboro is proud to announce its recognition as a Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program Provider (MDPP) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This designation allows Medicare participants in Greensboro and across North Carolina to access the YMCA’s successful Diabetes Prevention Program, both in-person and virtually, with insurance coverage.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program has been shown to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58-71%. This program is designed to help participants make sustainable lifestyle changes through a combination of education and support.
“Our goal is to reach individuals who are unaware of their prediabetes status and empower them to take control of their health,” says Angela Rogers, Director of Community Health and Wellness. “Through evidence-based programs, we create lasting community impact by promoting healthier behaviors, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes among Medicare beneficiaries and achieving cost-savings through weight loss and improved population health.”
Participants can choose to attend sessions in person, via distance learning, or through a hybrid model. Led by a trained lifestyle coach, small group discussions will cover topics such as healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior modifications. The program follows a structured approach, starting with 16 weekly sessions, transitioning to three sessions every other week, and concluding with monthly sessions over the course of a year.
The curriculum is developed by the CDC and emphasizes setting small, achievable goals that empower participants to take control of their health and significantly lower their risk of type 2 diabetes.
