[Rockingham County, N.C.]— On Monday, June 3, 2024 at around 10:11 a.m., Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputies were notified of a high-speed chase involving a yellow-in-color Toyota Prius heading towards Rockingham County from Caswell County. The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of the vehicle.

The Prius had been reported stolen from Caswell County, and the pursuit started in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, when law enforcement officials located and tried to stop the vehicle. The Prius headed back into Caswell County from Virginia, then into and across Rockingham County, and into Henry County, Virginia. During this long pursuit, the Prius frequently reached speeds of between 90 – 100 mph.

The vehicle was stopped by Henry County Sheriff’s Deputies in Henry County, Virginia. At that time, the driver fled the car on foot into the surrounding woods. Law enforcement quickly apprehended the driver and the vehicle’s four other occupants.

Upon further investigation, the four passengers of the stolen Prius stated they had tried repeatedly to get the driver to stop the vehicle, and he refused, holding them against their will.

Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputies have charged the driver of the vehicle, MARCUS LEDELL PRUNTY, 51, of Danville, Va., with one count of Felony Flee to Elude and four counts of Second Degree Kidnapping. He is currently being held in the Henry County Jail, awaiting extradition on these charges.

“I want to thank the Deputies from Pittsylvania and Henry Counties Sheriff’s Offices in Virginia, the Virginia State Police, the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office, Rockingham County Communications Dispatchers, and our own Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputies for their professionalism and for working together so well. Together, they were able to put an end to this pursuit and took this individual into custody,” said Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page.
