(Eden, NC) – On Sunday, September 18, 2022, at approximately 12:59 A.M., the Eden Police Department conducted a License Checking station on N. Van Buren Rd. between the intersections of Cox St. and Aiken Rd. A vehicle traveling north approached the checking station, stopped in the roadway, and then made an abrupt U-Turn. The vehicle fled southbound on Van Buren Rd. Officers pursued the car with lights and sirens activated in attempts to stop the fleeing motorist. Officers pursued the vehicle for approximately 20 miles. The car finally came to a stop on HWY 29. The driver fired a gun in the direction of the officers and fled on foot. Officers continued the pursuit on foot and apprehended the driver without further incident.
The vehicle’s driver was identified as Stanley Raynard Townsend (44) of Durham, North Carolina.
Stanley Raynard Townsend of Durham North Carolina was arrested and charged with one (1) count of attempted 1st degree murder, two (2) counts of assault with a firearm on law enforcement, one (1) count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, one (1) count of assault with a deadly weapon on law enforcement, driving while impaired, one (1) count of PWISD MDMA, possession of drug paraphernalia and numerous traffic violations as a result of the chase. Townsend was issued a $7,517,000.00 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Rockingham County District Court on October 6, 2022.
