DSS Warns Of Fraudulent Emails Promoting Nonexistent Summer Energy Assistant Program

(Rockingham County, NC) – The Rockingham County Department of Social Services (DSS) has been alerted by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to a potential scam targeting elderly residents through fraudulent emails.

These deceptive emails falsely promote a nonexistent summer Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP), claiming to offer additional energy support. The messages often include a phone number and reference the names of legitimate state representatives in an attempt to appear credible.

Rockingham County DSS would like to emphasize that there is no summer LIEAP program. If you receive one of these emails, DO NOT reply. Instead, mark the email as spam and delete it immediately.

If residents require assistance with their energy bills, they are encouraged to apply for assistance through the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP), which is administered by the Department of Social Services.

Anyone with questions or concerns should contact Rockingham County DSS directly at (336) 342-1394 and ask to speak with someone with the Energy Assistance Programs.

The Rockingham County Department of Social Services remains committed to protecting residents from fraud and ensuring access to credible support services.
