(Wentworth, NC) – The Rockingham County Landfill will be accepting storm debris from those affected by the May 6, 2022 storm, free of charge.

A sever storm hit Rockingham County in the evening hours of Friday, May 6. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg confirmed a 300-yard-wide EF1 Tornado touched down causing 110 mile-per-hour winds and touched nearly eight miles of land within County borders.

“We are very blessed no one was harmed during this storm,” County Manager, Lance Metzler said, “I am very thankful how responsible our citizens were and how quickly our Emergency Services crews worked to ensure the safety of our community. Houses and property can be replaced, lives cannot.”

Because of this, Rockingham County Government is opening their landfill for homeowners affected by this natural disaster. Residents who have vegetation, construction and demolition debris may drop-off any and all storm damage debris until Saturday May 21, 2022. Items accepted will include tree limbs, leaves, and other housing materials the storm damaged.

Our Landfill crews will have a map of affected areas to verify debris is from impacted areas. Those attempting to dispose of debris and trash not found in the impact zones will be subject to normal dumping fees. Companies cleaning up and dumping for homeowners will have to provide the name, physical address and phone number of the homeowner that hired them along with their company contact information.

Normal business hours for the Landfill are Monday through Friday 7:30am until 4:15pm and Saturday 7:30am until 12:30pm. Free storm debris dumping will end at Noon on Saturday May 21, 2022.
