The honor recognizes Cone Health for higher survival rates, fewer return trips to the hospital and fewer complications after care
Cone Health News Release • March 16, 2023 • D. Allred
Greensboro – Cone Health Heart & Vascular Center is one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals™. This is according to an independent quality analysis provided by PINC AI™ and reported by Fortune. The center—based at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital—is the only place in the Triad on the prestigious list. It is there for the second consecutive year and fourth time in the past 6 years.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for all Americans, resulting in nearly 700,000 deaths and $229 billion in added costs each year. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control adds that about 20.1 million adults age 20 and older have some form of coronary artery disease.
“For decades we have been one of the most innovative heart and vascular centers quickly bringing new treatments to patients,” says Ruth Fisher, vice president, Cone Health Heart & Vascular Center. “Our focus on practical innovation to provide the best possible care for our patients is why we’re consistently recognized as national leaders in the treatment of heart attacks, heart failure and a broad range of heart and vascular treatments.”
To select top performers, PINCL AI performed an objective, independent, quantitative research analysis using publicly available data measuring cardiac care in the United States to create the list of top 50 hospitals.
50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals™ program performance
This year, the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals™ program winners delivered better results while operating more efficiently and at a lower cost. Eligible hospitals are ranked for performance across four measurement grouping areas.
Compared to a peer group of non-winning cardiovascular hospitals, this year’s winners had:
· Significantly higher survival rates of those in the hospital (19% to 40.6% higher).
· Fewer patients with complications (13.2% to 15.4% fewer.)
· Higher 30-day survival rates for acute myocardial infarction, heart failure and coronary artery bypass grafting patients (0.4% to 0.9% points higher).
· $860 to $5,076 less in total costs per patient case (the smallest dollar-amount difference was for heart failure, and the largest was for heart bypass surgery.)
· Patients had a better experience at benchmark hospitals compared to peer hospitals.
“Given the life and death nature of this condition, patients and their loved ones need credible information to help them determine where to go for the best possible care. said Leigh Anderson, Premier’s President of Performance Services and the leader of PINC AI™. This objective, data-driven study proves that Cone Health Heart & Vascular Center excels across a range of core performance indicators, which directly leads to significantly higher survival rates associated with cardiac care, with fewer readmissions and complications.”
The PINC AI™ 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals™ program focuses on short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients. It includes patients requiring medical management, as well as those who receive invasive or surgical procedures. Eligible hospitals are ranked for performance across four measurement grouping areas.
