(Wentworth, NC) – Assistant Fire Marshal Jeremy Shelton has been recognized for his nearly 20 years in the fire service industry. The American Red Cross’s Salute to Heroes organization selected Shelton for this honor following a nomination based on his volunteerism, full-time service to the County and his community outreach contributions.

In addition to his Assistant Fire Marshal title, Jeremy Shelton volunteers at a local fire department and teaches at Rockingham Community College. He has played a pivotal role in several fire safety and fire prevention programs including the distribution and installation of deaf or hard-of-hearing alarms along with installing carbon monoxide alarms throughout the county.

“Jeremy’s work goes beyond the office or fire station, it’s so much more.” Fire Marshal Melissa Joyce said in her nomination form, “he often sacrifices his nights and weekends to serve on the Rockingham County Honor Guard.” Joyce continued that in this role, Jeremy coordinates funeral services for local and surrounding fallen firefighters and provides support to their families.

“We are lucky to have someone so dedicated to the people of Rockingham County,” Director of Emergency Services Rodney Cates said. “I am happy to see his hard work recognized.”

The American Red Cross’s Salute to Heroes program allows every-day people to be honored for their extraordinary acts of service. A dinner is held each year to honor those awarded and the person or people responsible for the nomination. Jeremy Shelton along with seven other local heroes were honored in late September as a part of the Piedmont Triad Region of the organization. More information about this year’s recipients can be found here.

Rockingham County Government sends its warmest congratulations and appreciation to Jeremy Shelton and his service to the community.
