Rockingham County, NC – The Piedmont Instrument Classes for Kids (P.I.C.K.) program is now accepting applications for beginner and intermediate students interested in learning guitar, banjo, or fiddle. Elementary, middle, and high school students are welcome to apply for these once-a-week classes, held in Eden, NC.
P.I.C.K. is a program of Piedmont Folk Legacies (PFL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional string music. PFL ensures that the rich heritage of Piedmont string music, including the legacy of local music legend Charlie Poole, continues to thrive.
Eden proudly claims Poole as one of its own, recognizing his major contributions to the development of country music and old-time string band traditions.
“Thanks to supporters like Rockingham County Arts Council and others, we are able to offer scholarships so that no child is denied the opportunity to learn an instrument due to financial inability to pay,” said Louise Price, Director of Piedmont Folk Legacies. “Learning an instrument not only connects young people to our region’s cultural roots, but it also builds confidence, creativity, and discipline.”
Jenny Edwards, Executive Director of the Rockingham County Arts Council, added, “We are proud to support the P.I.C.K. program. It’s a vital opportunity for youth to experience the joy of music, develop new skills, and carry forward the rich tradition of string music that has helped shape Rockingham County.”
Applications for the P.I.C.K. program are open now, and classes will begin soon. Scholarships are available, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate.
