Obituary: GERALD MONTAIGNE III

Gerald “Gerry” Montaigne III, a Reidsville resident and retired comptroller with Morrisette Paper and Packaging, died on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro. He was 71.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Gerry was the son of the late Gerald Montaigne Jr., a  DuPont Company executive, and Anne Kavanagh Montaigne. Gerry grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and received his undergraduate degree from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and a graduate degree in accounting from the University of Delaware. In 1972, he married Anne Allen of Amelia Courthouse, Virginia.

After working for the DuPont Company and Miller Brewing Company, Gerry went to work for Morrisette Packaging, where he spent 30 years as an accountant and comptroller. He lived in Reidsville for the past 40 years. 

Gerry was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry. He volunteered his time at the Reidsville Senior Center, where he assisted people with their tax returns. He and his wife enjoyed spending time at his parents’ beach house in Avalon, NJ, and later at their condominium in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Gerry, also enjoyed playing golf and traveling, and he was a devoted Hampden-Sydney alumni. He was also a history buff and huge Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife.

Surviving are his son, Gerald Montaigne IV, and his daughter-in law, Missy Montaigne, of Vinton, VA; his brother, Fen Montaigne and Fen’s wife, Laurie Hays; his granddaughters, Mackenzie Brewer and Kalyn Brewer; his great grandchildren, Elijah Brewer and Lilly Jean Smith, and his nieces, Claire Montaigne and Nuni Montaigne.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 10, 2022, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church,  315 Lindsey St.  Reidsville, NC. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.  The family will see friends immediately following the service in the Pipkin Parlor of St. Thomas.  The family asks that those in attendance please wear a mask or face covering.
