Obituary: WALSTON DAVID WILLIS

By | Published | No Comments

Walston “David” Willis, 54, of Reidsville, passed away peacefully at home on September 27, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Though diagnosed with cancer, David refused to let it define him; instead, he made the most of the time he had. He cherished precious moments with his family, witnessed the birth of two grandchildren, traveled across the country, enjoyed fishing in Currituck, and operated a sawmill. In his 54 years, David lived more than many do in a lifetime.

Born on April 6, 1970, in Dover, Delaware, David moved to Germany with his parents, Bobby and Merry Willis, at just two weeks old. As a toddler, he spent a month touring Europe, even making the front page of a Dutch newspaper. By age five, he was fluent in German when the family returned to the U.S.

While he didn’t pursue long-term formal education, David was one of the smartest people you could meet, often appearing unassuming until engaged in conversation. His insatiable thirst for knowledge spanned various subjects, particularly WWI and WWII history, which he could discuss with the expertise of a professor. A lover of music, he delighted friends with morning renditions while riding his stationary bike, quickly identifying songs within seconds, especially classic rock, Motown, and ’80s hits. He was a formidable opponent in Trivial Pursuit.

From an early age, David learned the value of hard work and determination. He approached both work and play with equal vigor.

In 1991, David and Tanya were set up on a blind date by her lifelong friend, leading to a whirlwind romance that culminated in their marriage just nine months later in April 1992. Their 32-year love story blossomed into a family with two children, two bonus children, and four grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.

David built two successful HVAC businesses but eventually chose to work at Elon University as the Plumbing Supervisor, a role he cherished. He often expressed his love for the people he worked with, who brightened his days.

A man of integrity, David was true to his word. He often spoke of the blessings he received during his illness, particularly the gift of extra time with his family. He believed that he had been granted a miracle, stating that everyone should “wake up and get on with living.” David made the most of each moment, feeling profoundly grateful for the life he led.

David was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James Stone Daniel and Mamie Bell Phillips; paternal grandparents, William Burton (Telley) and Martha Elliott Willis; and his in-laws, Robert and Loretta Rimmer. He was also preceded by his nephew, Brad Sowers, who was the ring-bearer at David and Tanya’s wedding.

In addition to his wife, Tanya Rimmer Willis, David is survived by his son, David Alex Willis and wife Louise (Reidsville); his daughter, Merry Kate Parks and husband Dustin (Reidsville); parents Bobby and Merry Willis (Reidsville); brother Benjamin Willis and wife Sandy (Eden); grandchildren Trevor Alexander Willis, Ellie Katreen Parks, Walston Devin Willis, and Marleigh Wren Parks. He is also survived by numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends, along with his beloved pets Louie and Cupid.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Zachary Vaslow and nurse Kimberly Smith of the Wesley Long Cancer Center for their exceptional care, as well as the team at Ancora Compassionate Care, particularly Caroline.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in David’s name may be made to the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, honoring his commitment to supporting blue-collar workers, or to Baptist Temple Church in Reidsville.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 1, at 11 a.m. at Baptist Temple Church, 729 Wentworth Street, Reidsville, NC. The family will receive visitors on September 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church, and at other times, they welcome visitors at their home.
