Obituary: BILLIE LOU MORTON

Mrs. Billie Lou Morton of Greensboro passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

Born on July 19, 1929, in Rockingham County, NC, to William and Mary Everett, Billie Lou was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband of 64 years, Robert, and her precious baby daughter, Kathy Rae.

She is survived by her son, John Morton, and his wife, Debbie; her daughter, Mary Lou Mooney, and her husband, Jim; her sister, Bobbie Paschal; and five grandchildren: Aaron Morton (Melinda), Christy Turner (Brian), Brian Morton, April Poling (Dan), and Marideth Riggs (Adam). Nanny Billie was also the proud great-grandmother to nine great-grandchildren (Michael, Andrew, Megan, Emilie, LeeAnn, Carter, Bradley, Merritt, and Mollie) and is fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.

Billie Lou was the heart and soul of her family—a devoted wife who shared a lifetime of love and partnership with Robert. As a loving mother, she nurtured her children with unwavering support, guidance, and care, instilling in them the values of faith, kindness and hard work. Her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother was one of immense pride and joy; she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating lasting memories and offering wisdom, warmth, and unconditional love. To her family, Billie Lou was not just a matriarch, but a constant source of strength, comfort, and love across generations.

After a successful career in cosmetology, which began with running an in-home beauty shop for nearly 20 years, she retired from GTCC as an instructor. Billie Lou was known as the trusted hairdresser for countless women from Brown Summit to Oak Ridge.

A steadfast and lifelong member of her childhood church, Billie Lou’s faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She served diligently on various committees, taught Sunday School, and led numerous fundraisers helping to support the church and its mission.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 23, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, 1909 Richardson Drive, Reidsville, NC, and at other times at the residence. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 24, at 2 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Dr. Suzanne Michael and Reverend Timothy James. Burial will follow at Center United Methodist Church, 6142 Lake Brandt Road, Greensboro, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Church, 361 Mt. Carmel Church Road, Reidsville, NC 27320, or to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to their many friends and loved ones for their care, love, and concern during Billie Lou’s recent health decline. They especially wish to acknowledge her devoted caregivers—Rickie, Margaret, Sue, and Becky, also Autumn, Christina, and Cydney of Trellis Supportive Care—who cared for her with love and compassion.
