Obituary: DORIS “TEENY” ATKINS

Mrs. Doris (Teeny) Atkins, age 99, of 600 N. 10th Avenue, Mayodan, NC, died on Wednesday, July 13th at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville, NC.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 17th at 2:00 p.m. at Mayodan United Methodist Church with Rev. Garrett Collins officiating. Masks are requested to be worn. Inurnment will follow in the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery.

Teeny was born on February 2, 1923, in Mayodan, NC. She was the daughter of the late Richard Brantley Atkins and Cora Hodge Atkins and was one of eleven children.

Teeny worked at Washington Mills until her 3rd child was born and then she was a fulltime homemaker and master seamstress. She was a lifelong member of Mayodan United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Choir in her earlier years, was a member of the United Methodist Women, and served on several boards throughout her life. She graduated with honors from Mayodan High School where she was a member of the Beta Club. She loved to line dance and up until her late 80’s you would find her dancing at the Recreation Department and on the dance floor at her granddaughters’ weddings. She was from the generation that could swing dance, and she and her husband were a pair to be reckoned with on the dance floor.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Lloyd Atkins, who she married in 1943, sisters, Nellie Hensdale, Ruby Shelton, Maragret Fortune, Frances Martin, Libby Williams, and Peggy Atkins and her brothers, J.B., Roy and Michael Atkins.

Teeny is survived by her three children, Stephen Douglas Atkins, Sheila Atkins Lake (Dwight), and Mark Todd Atkins; her three grandchildren, Jennifer Lake Mauro (Greg), Meredith Lake Musulin (Steve), and Julien Atkins; and four great grandchildren, Lillie Kate Mauro, Luke Mauro, Josh Musulin, and Aubrey Musulin. She is also survived by one sister, Shirley Montgomery.
