Charles Frederick “Fred” Burton, Jr., 93, of Reidsville, NC, passed away on September 2, 2023. He was born at home on February 18, 1930 in the community of Harrisons Crossroads in Rockingham County, and he lived most of his life near his birthplace.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Barbara Hodgin Burton, and his brother, John M. Burton. He is also survived by his son, Charles F. Burton III, his daughter, Sarah B. Burnside, her husband Warren S. Burnside, and their son, Alexander H. Burnside. Fred was preceded in death by his mother, Ivey M. Burton, his father, Charles F. Burton Sr., and his sister, Mary B. Robertson.

Fred was a lifelong and active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, a church to which his family has deep ties. He served as the church’s treasurer for many years. Fred attended Wentworth School and Guilford College. His education at Guilford was interrupted by service in the Army, and he was seriously wounded in the Korean War. After two years of recuperation, he resumed his studies at Guilford, and he met Barbara there. After receiving his degree, Fred worked for 37 years at Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, first in the payroll department, then in the credit union. He especially enjoyed helping family, friends, and Fieldcrest employees find and buy cars. Fred was an active member of the Eden Lions Club, serving as secretary for seven years and as president for one. Perhaps due to his experience in Korea, he was a frequent blood donor, giving over 27 gallons. In his free time, he enjoyed working on cars and most other things mechanical.

A funeral ceremony to celebrate Fred’s life will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, located at 1891 Bethlehem Church Rd, Reidsville, NC, on Friday, September 8, at 11:00 am, with burial to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to Hospice of Rockingham County.

Fred Burton will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of hard work, dedication, and kindness will forever be remembered.
