Iris Jean Kennedy Coleman, 88, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, August 29th, 2023, after a long battle with declining health.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 2nd , at Stokesdale Baptist Church with Reverend Darrel Freeman and Pastor Brian Scotton officiating. The family will receive friends a half hour prior to the service from 2:30 pm to 3 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Iris was born August 5, 1935 to Herbert Joseph and Daisy Della Lawson Kennedy of Danbury. She attended school in Danbury before moving to Stokesdale with her family in the late 1950’s. She later moved to Summerfield, NC with her late husband, Lewis Merrill Coleman. Iris loved watching the New York Yankees and playing softball for the Stokesdale Moose Lodge in the 70’s and 80’s. Her favorite places to travel and enjoy were High Rock Lake where she loved spending time with family and traveling to Florida to visit friends. She worked 25 years at Blue Bell in Stokesdale then retired from Burlington Industries of Stokesdale after 28 years when they closed. She was a lifelong member and the oldest charter member of Stokesdale Baptist Church where she has worshipped since 1962.
She was predeceased by her father and mother; brothers, William Kennedy, Buddy Kennedy, Donald Braxton Kennedy and Fount Kennedy; along with her sisters, Thelma Marie Kennedy and Mattie Ruth Kennedy Hicks.
Iris is survived by her daughter, Betty Carole Coleman of Madison, NC; grandchildren, Donna Rierson Stanley (Joseph) of Madison and Robert J. Rierson (Ryann) of Kernersville; two great-Grandchildren, Diana Elizabeth Stanley and Travis Lane Rierson and many nieces and nephews. One of her nephews, Ronnie Kennedy, traveled from Florida to help with her care. Her beloved pets, Bentley and Lily, will miss her. They brought her so much love.
