Mattie Lee Keen Carter was born April 28, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia to the late Thomas Allen and Lizzy Maude Keen. She was a loving and passionate lady who loved the Lord. She knew the Lord at early age. Being educated in the Rockingham County School System, Mattie was a domestic worker within Reidsville, NC for many years. With the help of her mother and family members, she raised two young boys upon the passing of her husband. After all the help from her mother, she became her caregiver until her passing. Mattie loved her family and friends. She loved to see her family get together and just laugh and talk. Mattie started driving later in life and she loved her white Buick. She loved flowers especially these Snowball bushes that were moved when she moved to another location with her mother. She was fortunate to have come across many friends that contributed to her blessed life, and she was very grateful for their presence.

She was a devoted member of Grooms Chapel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. G.H. Badgett. During her journey, she was a member of the Senior Choir for many years. She had the honor of representing Grooms as NAACP’s Mother of the Year. Mattie was also a devoted member of the Senior Saints Ministry at Grooms Chapel and the Missionary Department.

In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Lee Carter; brothers Robert Keen, Emanuel Jones, Ernest Miles, and Bernard Jones; sisters Sarah Thomas and Cora Wilson; and grandson Antonio Carter.
