Obituary: JOSEPH IRVIN REED, JR

Min. Joseph Irvin Reed, Jr., the beloved husband of Min. Portia Patterson Reed, transitioned this life on Monday, April 10, 2023, leaving the cares of this world behind and uniting with his Heavenly Father.

He was born on August 18, 1950 to the late Joseph Reed, Sr. and Australia Williamson Reed in Reidsville, North Carolina. He attended school at Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1968 where he played football and trained in masonry. He received his formal education at Barber Scotia College, receiving his Bachelor’s in Education and North Carolina A & T State University where he earned Master degrees in Counselling and Education. He was a teacher at Reidsville High School in Reidsville and James E. Holmes Middle School in Eden where he retired. He was a member of the United States National Guard. Minister Reed was married for 41 years to his beautiful wife and partner in ministry. Joseph was a wonderful father, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and mentor to many. Joseph attended Jerusalem United Holy Church during his early years. He was called into the Ministry under the late Reverend Dr. Lettie Cohen working faithfully at Saint Mariah and Gospel Light. He later returned to Jerusalem United Holy Church with his wife and son. His final church home was Love and Faith Christian Fellowship. He accomplished much during his earthly walk, touching many souls, witnessing and leading many to Christ. He was a choir member, Sunday school teacher, Minister of the Gospel, alter worker, member of the Witnessing Team, former teacher at Bible College, Administrative Deacon, Intercessory Prayer leader and Partner In Prayer Leader.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Reed, Sr. and mother, Australia Williamson Reed; sisters, Susan Elaine Reed and Peggy Davis Reed and brother, Carl Vernon Reed; mother and father-in-law, Loretta Blackstock Broadnax and Walter Patterson, Sr.

In the community, he was a member of the Rockingham County Detention Ministry, Who’s Who Among – Americus Teachers and the North Carolina Teachers Association.

He is held in loving memory by his loving wife, Minister Portia Patterson Reed of the home; devoted son, Joseph Irvin Reed, III and a beautiful daughter-in-law, Leah DeLoach Reed of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; god daughters, Danica R. Kelly of Reidsville and Taleesha Hammock of Greensboro; also to cherish his memory are sisters, Barbara Reed Ashe (James Lee), Evelyn A. Reed and Sandra Reed Coley, all of Reidsville; nieces, Rachel A. Fountain (Jeff) of Brown Summit, Shekeina B. Coley of Reidsville; nephews, Elder Steven R. Mc Cain of Greensboro, James Kevin Ashe of Charlotte, Clinton Reed Mc Cain (Candice) of Charlotte and Coran J.R. Coley of Bentonville, Arkansas; great-nieces and great-nephews, Jedidiah Mc Cain, Malachi Mc Cain, Nathaniel Mc Cain, Breanna Thompson, Sania Mc Cain, Cristian Mc Cain, Jael Mc Cain, Joshua Fountain and Ceria Ashe; great-great niece and nephew, Australia Ashe and Isaiah Estrada; step father-in-law, Louis Broadnax, Sr. of Eden; sisters-in-law, Sherah Lowe of Greensboro and Doris Brown of Eden; brothers-in-law, Kerry Patterson of San Diego, California, Walter Patterson (Vickie) of Eden and Louis Broadnax, Jr. (Janice) of Summerfield; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2023 from the Love & Faith Christian Fellowship, 521 Cinema Court, Kernersville. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at the church. Public viewing will be Thursday afternoon at Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street, Reidsville.
