Obituary: LEONARD POWELL HICKS

Mr. Leonard Powell Hicks, age 85, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2023. Leonard was born to Mebane Pilly Hicks and Maude Lawson Hicks in Stokes County on January 22, 1938. He spent most of his life residing in the Pine Hall area.

Leonard was a sincere and humble person who treated everyone he met with kindness and respect. Throughout his life he was always civic minded and community oriented. He was drafted and served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963 and received recognition for sharpshooting. Because of his love of the earth and being a good steward of the environment, Leonard thrived in his career as a Cooperative Extension Technician in Stokes County. Family, friends, and elderly neighbors benefited from Leonard’s large garden until the last few years of his life. Service to his community included: Session Member at Pine Hall Presbyterian Church, Boy Scouts of America, Pine Hall Ruritan Club Charter Member, Hanging Rock State Park Advisory Committee, Colonial Funeral Home Board of Directors, Stokes County Animal Shelter Advisory Board, Stokes County Historical Society, Pine Hall Volunteer Fire Department, and little league soccer coach.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Dale Nelson Hicks, his brother Bobby, stepdaughter Lisa Carter, and several well-loved boxer bulldogs named Butch. Left to remember and miss him are his wife Linda Hall Hicks, his son Jamie Hicks (Crissy), stepdaughter Susan Coble and step-son-in-law Mike Carter. His grandchildren who gave him lots of joy and amusement are Carter Hicks, Will Carter (Anne), Mitchell Coble (Whitney), Martha Carter (Russ), Elizabeth Adams (Taylor), and two great-grandchildren Hudson and Hunter Coble. Leonard is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Libby and Fred Paris, who not only were his best friends but could always be counted on to help no matter the issue. Leonard’s nephews and nieces also never hesitated to provide support when needed. They are Tony Paris (Judy), Robbie Paris (David), Penny Richardson (Kevin), Corey Paris (Jenna), Nathan Paris (Crystal), Caleb Richardson, and Caroline Richardson.

A graveside service for Leonard will be held Sunday, April 16, 2023, at 2pm at Pine Hall Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Reverend Doctor John Senior officiating.

Memorials can be made to Pine Hall Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, PO Box 82, Pine Hall, NC 27042, or the Friends of the Stokes County Shelter, 1111 Dodgetown Rd., Walnut Cove, NC 27052, or another worthy cause of the donor’s choosing. Random acts of kindness within your community will also be a great tribute to Leonard.
